Ask Nightwish a question
Susanna, Helsinki
February 2012
When Kai Hahto came to teach you some drumming technics (use of brushes) did you feel like going back to the days when you first started paying drums?
-Susanna (Helsinki)
I wouldn't say "back to the days", but it was fantastic to get back to basics and to get somebody with more knowledge on drumming to give you some great hints. Kai is an excellent teacher and with his enthusiasm and positive spirit he makes you take everything out of the lessons.

Hello Jukka!
Do you have scheduled band rehearsals? How often do you meet up? And do you also do stuff together outside of music?
We don't have regular rehearsals as a band. Before new albums and tours we gather together and rehearse a lot but outside that everybody are doing it on their own.

Some of us meet each others more often outside touring than the others. Me and Tuomas are living in the same area so we hook up together once in a while.

What is your favorite cartoon figure and why?
-Siiri (Littoinen)
Winnie the Pooh. Pooh's carefree life philosophy, stemming from the fact that his brain is incapable of complex thought, is something that everyone in the modern world who thinks he or she knows everything should learn from. Even the simplest of things can lead to marvelous adventures, if you’re able to seize the moment and give room for your imagination.

Can you tell what's your favorite song in Imaginaerum? The drums and percussion around the album are awesome,do you think that Imaginaerum was the best album when it comes to this aspect?
Guilherne (Brazil)
Creating Imaginaerum was a fantastic trip. We got to do many interesting new things and it's superb how they turned out to be. It's impossible to say which album is the best since they all are mirrors of their time and at that particular time they felt just right. Let's just say that I'm extremely satisfied on how Imaginaerum turned out to be.

I've had so many epic things in my life! Getting kids. Playing sold out huge arena for the first time. Release of our first album. Getting first gold record. Going to the Universal Studios for the first time. Seeing Gladiator the movie for the first time. The list is endless.

Hi Jukka!
My question is; Is there any story behind your vegetarian habits? I'm so curious!
Greetings from Mexico!
Back in the day I read a book which was called something like "Justice to animals" and that's where it all started. It was about how animals are treated before they end up on our plates and I just didn't want to be part of that any more!

What was the subject you were the best at when at school?
Victoria (Moscow)
I was a lot into sports and was actually quite good in it. Also music was (of course) quite high on my list of favorites. Additional to those two history classes were something I really liked. For a little while I actually even thought of going to study history into the university after the high school, but then got into my senses and did something else.

What's the latest tattoo you got inked? D'you have any ideas for future tattoos :P
The latest tattoo was done into my left arm in a form of my youngest daughter's name "Lara". No new tattoos planned at the moment, but getting a new tattoo has always been a quick process for me, so things might change in a short notice.

Hi there! :)
You are supposed to be in Ukraine for the first time... Is there still any other country you want to visit for the first time?
Thanks!
It's always a great pleasure to visit new countries and get to play your music to new audiences. It would be fantastic to get to play for example in New Zealand or in South Africa. Maybe one day...

Hi Jukka hope that you are doing fine? I would like to ask you how are you going with the new Tama drum set?
It's going very well, thanks for asking. It's basically identical to my previous sets so it was very easy to set it up the right way. And since it's easily THE best set out there how could I be but happy with it!

Hi! Our whole family was at the Icehall gig. It was absolutely great, as always!

What was that special drum Jukka played? Something I also noted was the instrument played by the guest musician — what was it? The sound was great. Wish you strength for the tour!
The show in Helsinki truly was a fantastic one! Somehow everything just went right.

The instrument I play in The Islander and in Nemo is called Cajon. It's a compact package that has it all! Maybe I should concider selling my drum set and just go with that...

The 6th musician on stage is Troy Donockley and the instrument he plays is called Uilleann Pipes. Those pipes are nowadays inseparable part of our sound!

What's up with the black case that is always sitting to the right of your drumkit? What is in there?
That's for my in-ear monitor system, mixers and triggers. So nothing really special there, just equipments to hear and to heard.
